Job Description

Reporting directly to the Human Resources Manager, the Health and Safety Specialist provides guidance to managers, supervisors and employees to promote a OHS culture and create a continuous improvement and proactive OHS management cycle.

Responsibilities include the following, but not limited to:

  • Conducting Hazard Assessments, through task analysis, physical demands analysis, risk assessments and workplace inspections; Recommending and/or implementing corrective action
  • Leading and overseeing the development, implementation and ongoing maintenance of the safety manual
  • Contributing to the creation of and/or maintenance of instructional documents, such as work procedures and training documents
  • Delivering safety training to managers, supervisors, employees, and new hires, as determined by policy and programs
  • Conducting gap analysis of safety programs through internal audits; developing and implementing a plan to address and remedy non-conformance issues
  • Leading and/or conducting incident and accident investigations; site liaison for MOL visits; escalating significant incident and accident information to the Management level
  • Participating in the design, development and delivery of new employee orientation programs
  • Acting as a resource to, or serving as a member on the Joint Health and Safety Committee and coordinating resolution of action items identified
  • Providing support during the life cycle of a WSIB claim
  • Creating statistical data, analytical and assessment reports, as required
  • Developing annual health and safety plans for the site based on a full review of health and safety-related needs ( assessment of hazards, analysis of database, audits, changing legislation and best practices) as required by all applicable legislations
  • Reviewing of all relevant legislation, amendments and best practices to optimize health and safety and environment programs
  • Perform other tasks or jobs as required

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years health and safety experience in a unionized environment
  • Degree/Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety
  • In depth knowledge of Ontario's Occupational Health & Safety Act and associated legislation
  • Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Word – Word, Excel, outlook)
  • Desire to be hands on and “on the floor”
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, time management, problem solving and conflict resolution skills
