Job Description

Our customer is looking for a Design Office Director with experience in the management and coordination of design/build modular buildings. This position requires the candidate to report to the VP of Design and run the day-to-day operations of the Design Department. The successful candidate will liaise between Owner, Architects and Engineers and the modular design team, and must be skilled in the development and interpretation of building design documents, the coordination of building systems and a deep understanding of building science. This position requires the candidate to be a creative problem solver with great people skills. The ideal candidate will have an interest in modular construction, automated fabrication systems, parametric design software and developing alternative approaches to the construction industry.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Overseeing Kitchener Design Office and reporting to the VP of Design
  • Working with VP and other design office to develop design standards
  • Working with VP and Sales to analyze potential projects
  • Working with VP to describe the Z-Modular systems to potential clients
  • Overseeing the Project Managers work on project budget and design/production schedule
  • Overseeing the Owner & Design Team to develop building design
  • Overseeing weekly meetings: Project, Details, Coordination, Staff & Production
  • Overseeing development of new modular details for current projects
  • Reviewing code for envelope, fire separations, accessibility, etc
  • Reviewing design details with team and flagging questions, conflicts or inconsistencies
  • Overseeing drawing package production including Permit & Shop Drawings
  • Working with Plant Manager to identify weekly production needs
  • Potential travel in Canada and USA to meet clients or visit other plants
  • Assisting in on boarding, training and mentoring for new designers and PMS
  • Delegating tasks to design team, assisting Design Manager in resourcing projects
  • Manufacturing review and resolving detailing in the shop
  • Assisting in R&D for Automation Processes – robotics and parametrics
  • Assisting in management of Dropbox, Sharepoint, PDM, Procure and BIM360
  • Assisting in the review and interview of potential employees

Qualifications

  • Minimum 15 years in construction/ architectural/engineering desing
  • Degree in related field
  • OAA or P.Eng is a definite asset
  • Experience running a 10-12 person Architectural / Engineering / Construction office
  • Experience managing Design/Build contracts and Design Consultants
  • Knowledge of CHOP work schedules and project budgets
  • Knowledge of CCDC contracts, management and administration
  • Liaison with Executive team, Design team, Clients, Contractors and Fabricators
  • In-depth understanding of OBC and other regulatory documents
  • Advanced understanding of Revit, BIM360 and/or BIM management
  • Experience producing construction drawings, shop drawings & details
